Hard to beat the sound of four b ig-ass radial engines tearing through the sky, but I’ll be damned if that ain’t the sexiest B-17 I ever did see!

The prettiest B-17 that ever was. Man those V-12 fairings look good.

That definitely looks awesome. Messing around with the B-17 at that point probably didn’t make much sense, even if there were engine shortages. I am wondering if the 307 would look better with those nacelles. My initial thought is probably not, simply because it’s hard to imagine the 307 looking better than it did:

That made me laugh, but then it got me thinking. George Lucas was a student of film, and he reportedly based some of his shots in Star Wars , particularly the scenes of the Millennium Falcon escaping from the Death Star, on 12 O’Clock High . It would not be beyond the realm of possibility that R2's domed head, and his location behind the pilot of the X-Wing fighter, was influenced by the dorsal turret on a B-17.

And let’s not forget the Millennium Falcon cockpit either...

Nice - are those Me rlins or turboprops?

Allison turbosupercharged V-12s.

Ah, yes I always mix up the Allison and Packard ( Merlin) V12s.
Gorgeous aircraft!

I think the Allison tends to get lost in the Merlin’s shadow.

If you have to replace radials with something, it doesn’t get much better than four V12s.
